Hiroshima police conducted a recent operation that resulted in the confiscation of over 400 cats, according to the organization “Humane World for Animals.” Of the rescued animals, approximately 40 have already been reunited with their owners after those individuals contacted the authorities regarding missing pets. Currently, more than 260 cats remain in police custody. The rescue effort yielded several pregnant cats, and subsequently, kittens were born while the animals were in care.
While the majority of the rescued cats were saved, the organization reported that some animals unfortunately died due to the extremely poor conditions in which they were previously kept. The cats and other animals rescued from the incident are presently receiving care from veterinarians and volunteers at a temporary shelter established within the premises of the Hiroshima criminal police department. The Associated Press reported that the incident was characterized as non-aggressive, noting that the individuals responsible for the situation did not attempt to escape.
The operation highlights the significant number of animals involved. Authorities and welfare groups are working to ensure the continued care and rehabilitation of the remaining cats and kittens. The effort underscores the complexity of managing large groups of stray or improperly cared-for pets, requiring extensive resources to manage both the immediate care and the long-term welfare of the animals involved.
