Security experts and local police have issued warnings regarding an increase in property theft, particularly during the summer months. Authorities note that while some people may perceive that unattended items are safer during vacation periods, criminal activity often targets these perceived vulnerabilities. Žydrūnas Bukauskas, head of the security department at GRIFS AG, observed that even with less favorable weather conditions, official statistics reveal that the seaside recorded more thefts in June compared to May.
He attributes this trend to the reduced attention people give to securing their belongings while enjoying holiday periods, allowing criminals to exploit these lapses in vigilance. The police officers of Klaipėda County echoed this concern, advising the public that vigilance must remain high. They cautioned that even objects left unsupervised for brief intervals can become targets for theft.
This seasonal pattern of opportunistic crime was highlighted by recent incidents, including a significant theft reported in the Old Town of Vilnius originating from the Neris river. Authorities stress that the lapse in routine attention is the primary factor enabling these thefts. They urge residents and visitors to remain highly aware of their surroundings and to take proactive measures to secure property, regardless of the duration of their absence.
The continued emphasis from law enforcement remains on the necessity of constant vigilance to deter criminal activity throughout the season.
