The EU has fined AliExpress 550 million euros: they explain what they have done

The European Union has criticized AliExpress for failing to implement sufficient measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods on its platform. During an investigation conducted in March 2024, the EU determined that the marketplace had not adequately addressed the issue, even after identifying unlawful items. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that certain products sold through aliexpress did not meet the stringent environmental and safety standards mandated by the EU.

EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen stated that ensuring consumer safety online requires a systematic process for identifying and eliminating risks. In a formal statement, Commissioner Virkkunen emphasized that the platform’s handling of these violations was insufficient. She noted that the delay in removing identified illegal goods for several weeks raised serious concerns regarding platform governance.

The EU’s directive stresses that marketplace operators must adhere to high standards of consumer protection. Commissioner Virkkunen called for immediate action, demanding that AliExpress align its practices with established safety benchmarks. The core concern centers on ensuring that the products available to consumers are legitimate and safe.

The EU has signaled that continued non-compliance, particularly concerning the sale of substandard or counterfeit goods, could result in further regulatory action. The findings underscore the EU’s commitment to maintaining robust safety standards for all goods sold digitally.
