The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the French ambassador to Tehran yesterday, during which ministry representatives asserted that the French government must cease its actions and interference within Iran’s internal affairs. During a weekly press conference, Ministry representative Esmaeil Baqaei stated that diplomats were accused of interfering in Iran’s internal affairs under the pretext of collaborating with civil society groups. Baqaei emphasized that, according to Iranian diplomatic law, these alleged activities “in no way were justified under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.” The summons highlights ongoing diplomatic tensions regarding the scope of foreign involvement in the country’s domestic policies.
The heightened diplomatic scrutiny follows previous reports involving French diplomatic personnel. Earlier on July 20, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, had informed the public that two French diplomats had been in the custody of Iranian officials the day prior, describing the experience as one involving “very serious” security services from the Islamic Republic. The Iranian Ministry’s statement represents a formal rejection of the perceived interference emanating from the French government.
By issuing this warning, Tehran reiterated its stance on maintaining sovereignty over its internal affairs, specifically addressing the activities of French diplomatic missions operating within Iran.
