The Kaunas Fire and Rescue Department reported an incident that occurred at approximately 3:24 p.m. today, involving the discovery of an explosive device in the sidewalk of the road within Bambiniai village, located in the Gražiškių seniūnija area. Following the initial report, local emergency protocols, designated as Plan “Shield,” were immediately implemented to manage the situation.
A specialized team from the Spent Explosive Ordnance Neutralization Battalion, part of the Engineer Battalion under Colonel Juozas Vitkus, was dispatched to the site to assess the hazard. Upon examination, the team positively identified the object as an 82 mm mortar mine. Authorities confirmed that the device, initially reported as a bomb, was handled with extreme caution.
The neutralization process required specialized equipment and personnel. The discovered bomb was subsequently removed from the area and taken away for controlled destruction procedures. The removal and safe handling of the explosive ordnance were executed by the dedicated mine neutralization team operating from the Vilkaviškis district.
The swift response of these specialized units ensured the area was secured and the dangerous mine was safely removed from the public thoroughfare. Authorities confirmed that the incident was contained and the area was cleared following the removal of the explosive material.
