A recent report indicates a substantial reduction in certain types of telecommunication fraud activity. According to the service providing the data, the volume of fraud calls has decreased by nearly 80%, while fraudulent SMS messages saw a decline of 42.1%. Despite this positive trend, the RRT issued a caution regarding the persistent nature of the threat.
RRT President Jūratė Šovienė noted that the effectiveness of the filtering measures implemented by service operators has reduced the profitability of generating fraud calls using forged Lithuanian numbers, leading to the significant quarterly drop in both fraud and blocked calls. However, she stressed that the threat remains active, advising that “fraudsters are constantly adapting, constantly changing their methods.”
The data also highlighted a geographical shift in the threat landscape. While overall numbers dropped, the service reported an increase in fraud calls originating from Latvia, Estonia, and various other international countries during the second quarter.
This pattern suggests that while domestic mitigation strategies have successfully hampered traditional methods of executing fraud calls, the fraudsters continue to evolve their tactics. The continued vigilance of service providers and the public remains crucial to counter these adaptive threats. The report emphasizes that the focus must remain on monitoring these changing patterns to effectively combat sophisticated fraud schemes.
