The “Rotterdam Rocks!” project, developed by the Dutch studio MVRDV, has won a competition organized by the social enterprise Shift. The initiative is designed to actively inspire visitors regarding necessary actions in the fight against climate change. This proposed structure is slated for construction in a future district situated on the south bank of the Maas river in Rotterdam.
Architecturally, the concept envisions seven massive, stacked boulders entirely covered in moss. The facade itself is designed to be highly textured, integrating elements such as soil, water features, native plants, and wildlife habitats. This vertical integration effectively expands the existing riverbank parkland while incorporating numerous windows and outdoor staircases into the rocky contours.
Internally, the structure is conceived as a comprehensive mixed-use facility. It will house a variety of functions, including an exhibition space, a hotel, a conference hall, office suites, a food zone, a restaurant, and an observation deck. Visitors will navigate through cave-like interiors, centered around an intricately designed core space.
The design successfully blends ecological restoration with urban functionality. The project, as presented through the competition, establishes a model for sustainable development within the urban environment. By merging biodiversity support with diverse commercial and cultural uses, “Rotterdam Rocks!” aims to create a landmark that serves both the community and the environment in the city of Rotterdam.
