Remember: the ophthalmologist identified the habits that most weaken the eyes

According to an expert interview conducted on the Lithuanian health news channel “Sveikatos virtuvė,” the increasing prevalence of myopia is attributed to significant shifts in modern environmental factors and daily routines. Ophthalmologist Indrė Rašinskaitė of “Vilnelės klinikų” suggests that the root cause lies in lifestyle modifications associated with intensive urbanization, extended educational periods, and altered work and leisure patterns. While technology, such as computers and smart devices, is frequently cited, the specialist cautions that the issue is not inherent to the technology itself.

Instead, she emphasizes that human habits have fundamentally changed. Previously, daily activities often involved more time spent outdoors or on manual household tasks. Currently, however, individuals spend the majority of their day engaged in close-range activities, including reading, writing, and interacting with digital screens.

The ophthalmologist explains that this prolonged, intense focus at close range places considerable strain on the eyes, leading to rapid fatigue and dryness. The shift away from outdoor exposure and toward screen-dominated engagement is key to understanding the decline in eye health. Rašinskaitė’s remarks underscore that while technological tools are part of modern life, the behavioral adjustments are crucial for mitigating vision strain.

The focus must shift from blaming specific devices to understanding and modifying daily routines to promote healthier visual habits.
