A widespread disruption to the power grid affected Latvia over the weekend due to severe stormy weather. The outages began on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. and continued through Sunday morning.
By 7 a.m. on Sunday, the disruption impacted the Latvian power transmission system. According to the power transmission system operator (AST), 46 out of more than 150 substations were non-operational.
The damage included five damaged 330 kV air transmission lines, alongside 44 affected 110 kV lines. Authorities reported that work had already restored power to three of the 110 kV air lines. In response to the crisis, AST announced that all available resources were mobilized on Sunday to remove technical obstacles and restore the electricity supply.
These recovery efforts are being conducted in cooperation with the ST company. Beyond the grid failures, the severe storm system moving through Riga caused significant localized damage, including numerous fallen trees and damaged roofing. The adverse weather conditions also impacted air travel, leading Riga Airport to report potential flight delays or diversions.
Overall, the event highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to extreme weather, requiring substantial efforts to restore full power transmission capabilities across the region.
