More dangerous than nuclear energy: a study reveals the risk of cancer for workers in this field

A recent study indicates that aircrew members require specific occupational protection against radiation levels corresponding to their actual exposure. According to Anupam Jena, a senior author on the research and a Health Policy Professor at Harvard Medical School, the findings emphasize the need for targeted safety measures for aviation personnel. Aircrew are known to receive among the highest annual effective doses of ionizing radiation compared to other groups of workers.

This elevated exposure is primarily attributed to cosmic radiation encountered at high altitudes. Furthermore, this profession has historically shown a higher incidence rate for certain types of cancer when compared to the general population. However, definitive research establishing the direct link between this exposure and elevated cancer mortality rates had previously been limited.

The new study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, addresses this gap by analyzing survival data. The research reveals a statistically significant finding: aircrew members face a higher risk of cancer mortality than the general working population. These results underscore the necessity of proactively managing occupational health risks for aviation workers.

The study suggests that current guidelines for radiation monitoring and protection must be rigorously reviewed to ensure that the protective measures provided are commensurate with the unique and elevated radiation exposure inherent to the job.
