Land survey specialists conducting preliminary work at the Gižų power plant site have encountered several historical artifacts as part of preparations for the “Harmony Link” project. Initial inspections revealed various metal objects, predominantly consisting of old agricultural implements and other unidentified metal remains. During subsequent checks of the designated territory, personnel last week found a 75 mm artillery shell containing explosive material.
The discovery was immediately reported to the General Aid Center. Sappers from the Juozas Vitkauskas Engineering Battalion of the Lithuanian Armed Forces responded to the scene and safely neutralized the shell. In addition to the artillery piece, surveying teams have documented the recovery of approximately 100 kilograms of various metal debris over the past few days.
The systematic inspection of the power plant site for unexploded ordnance and wartime materials is a critical component of the preparatory phase for constructing the “Harmony Link.” The careful handling and identification of these materials are necessary to ensure the safety of the construction process moving forward.
