The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, resulted in the deadliest terrorist incident in United States history, claiming an estimated 3,000 lives. In the coordinated assault, Islamist terrorists deliberately targeted the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon near Washington D.C. A fourth hijacked aircraft subsequently crashed in Pennsylvania.
Khalid Sheikha Mohammed was identified as a principal organizer of the September attacks, believed to have managed the communication and financial aspects of the plot. Following his arrest in Pakistan in 2003, Kh. Sh.
Mohammed underwent interrogation by U.S. Secret Service agents. A report from the U.S.
Senate indicated that during this interrogation period, the suspect was subjected to torture. In 2006, he was transferred to the U.S. Guantanamo prison, where he was slated to face trial regarding his involvement in the September 11 attacks.
However, proceedings against Mohammed and his co-conspirators were subsequently postponed.
