Instead of additional network cabling, they suggest buying 1.5 million generators: that would save us hundreds of millions of euros

During a meeting on Thursday, the conservative party chairman, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, presented a proposal to the energy minister detailing options for upgrading the country’s electrical infrastructure. The plan contrasts two primary methods for enhancing energy resilience: extensive cable laying or implementing a distributed generator program. The cost analysis presented reveals a significant financial difference between the two approaches.

The option involving the laying of an additional 6,000 kilometers of network is projected to cost the state 320 million euros. In comparison, the generator program is estimated to be 5.3 times more cost-effective, with an associated cost of 60 million euros. Regarding the generator mechanism, Kasčiūnas noted that the average cost for a single power generator is approximately 400 euros.

To facilitate the financing of these units, the proposal suggests that residents of ESO could contribute financially, with each resident potentially paying around 100 euros toward the required equipment. The discussion centers on bolstering the national grid, especially in light of infrastructure concerns following recent weather events and ongoing operational metrics for the national electricity provider. These plans aim to provide a clear financial pathway for addressing necessary upgrades, offering a substantial alternative to the comprehensive, high-cost cabling project.
