Operational concerns have been noted regarding the current deployment altitude of several satellites. Most currently operate between 300 and 400 km, which represents a significant deviation from the planned operational altitude of 870 km. Furthermore, some of the deployed satellites are reportedly losing altitude, with at least two units approaching the Earth’s atmosphere.
A key technical challenge is that lower operational altitudes result in shorter service lifespans. At these lower elevations, atmospheric resistance increases significantly, leading to faster rates of fuel consumption for the satellites. Regarding recent deployment efforts, out of sixteen satellites launched on March 24, twelve successfully reached the required operational altitude.
As of the end of August, these twelve units maintained an altitude of 550 km. These assets, which operate over Ukraine, provide Russian forces with an estimated up to one and a half hours of communication connectivity with ground terminals twice daily. This accelerated deployment effort follows the loss of access to Starlink connectivity on February 1.
The current operational status and the need for maintained communication links suggest a strategic emphasis on rapidly establishing alternative orbital assets to compensate for the service interruption.
