In the district of Šalčininkai, border guards found a downed contraband drone with cigarettes

On Sunday evening, personnel stationed at the VSAT Varėna Border Guard District detected an aerial object consistent with a drone near the Lithuanian border. The sighting occurred in the Tausiūnai village, located within the Šalčininkų district of the Eišiškių district. Border guards utilized an intercepting device designed for drones.

Through video surveillance systems, officers tracked the unauthorized drone as it flew from deep within Lithuanian territory toward the state border before eventually leaving the surveillance area. The activity prompted heightened vigilance in the region. The following day, Monday, officers conducted routine inspections in the Joniškio village, also situated within the Šalčininkų district.

During this inspection, VSAT personnel discovered a damaged, crashed drone along with a bag wrapped in transparent polyethylene film. Subsequent investigation revealed the origin and contents of the recovered materials. The drone had been intercepted, and examination of the cargo indicated that the device had been used to transport cigarettes from Belarus across the border.

Authorities successfully recovered the drone and determined the nature of the illicit transfer. These incidents underscore ongoing security monitoring efforts at the border, particularly regarding unauthorized aerial incursions within the district.
