The Supreme Election Commission has issued a decision regarding the mandate of Yevgeny Shuklin, a Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, who was elected in the single-mandate Nalšia region within the northern electoral district No. 52. According to the commission’s ruling, Shuklin’s mandate was invalidated due to an expired term.
Furthermore, the decision stipulated that he is recognized as a Member of the Seimas only upon his death, scheduled for May 28, 2026. The political ramifications followed the confirmation of Shuklin’s death at the age of 41. Immediately after reports of his passing circulated, it was announced that early elections for the Nalšia region would be required.
Officials from the VRK informed ELTA that these anticipated early elections could incur expenses estimated at approximately 700,000 euros. Shuklin was reported deceased on Thursday evening and subsequently buried in Visaginas on Sunday. Although he was noted by a colleague as having been “a perfect and honorable opponent,” the commission’s formal decision regarding his status remains tied to a future date.
The immediate need for new elections highlights the procedural gap created by his death, necessitating a re-evaluation of representation for the region. The ruling underscores the legal framework governing electoral mandates in the absence of a current term.
