WHO: Ebola virus spreads to new regions of Congo

As of Thursday, a total of 676 confirmed cases of the outbreak had been recorded, resulting in 136 fatalities, according to Olivier le Polain, who is assisting local authorities in Beni, North Kivu province, on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO). Le Polain reported that new cases are being detected nearly every day across various health zones. While the majority of these cases are currently linked to the Ituri province, authorities have noted that local transmission of the virus is now also being documented in the affected area.

The WHO has issued warnings regarding the scale of the Ebola epidemic, emphasizing that health workers are managing a rapidly escalating outbreak. According to Le Polain, several significant challenges complicate containment efforts. These include the persistence of ongoing conflict, the substantial number of displaced persons in the region, and the general weakness of the local healthcare infrastructure.

The situation necessitates continuous monitoring, particularly in several identified high-risk areas. The detection of new clusters of cases underscores the dynamic nature of the spread. The WHO continues to advise that coordinated efforts are essential to track the virus effectively and manage the evolving public health crisis across the region.
