At 19:16 on the specified date, the Fire and Rescue Department reported an incident involving a gas leak at a gas station located on Kvėdarna street in Vatušių village, Rietavo district. Initial reports indicated that a gas tank had ruptured, leading to a significant leak. Upon arrival, emergency crews found gas escaping from an underground tank due to a cracked pipe.
The immediate area was secured and cordoned off with barrier tape. Due to the hazardous nature of the leak, authorities initiated evacuations. A total of 20 people were evacuated from nearby residences.
Further complications arose from leaks originating from the gas cylinders within the station itself, requiring the evacuation of five additional individuals from that area. The response efforts were complicated by the ongoing harvest operations in the vicinity, necessitating careful management to prevent ignition risks involving agricultural machinery. To contain the hazard, the gas tanks were systematically removed from the storage area.
Subsequently, the gas cylinders were relocated to a secure zone situated within an 800-meter radius, under the supervision of police officers, ensuring the site remained safe following the leak.
