The Klaipėda State Maritime Port Authority (KVJUD) has secured approval for a significant loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The deal was officially approved by Juras Taminskas, who is currently serving as the acting Minister of Communications. Both parties anticipate the formal signing of the agreement in the near future.
The financial resources provided through this loan are earmarked for twelve distinct projects designed to enhance the development, boost the competitiveness, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Klaipėda port. The scope of planned improvements is extensive, encompassing critical infrastructure upgrades. Specific projects slated for development include the deepening of the shipping channel connecting the Kiaulės Nugaros Island and the Smeltė peninsula, alongside the construction of a modern cruise terminal.
In a statement regarding the development, Juras Taminskas emphasized the strategic importance of the financing. He noted that finalizing this agreement will significantly strengthen the port, positioning it to maintain its leadership role in progress, sustainability, and innovation within the Baltic Sea region. The funds are anticipated to provide substantial impetus not only to the port’s physical expansion but also to the broader maritime industry, green energy sectors, and overall national security framework.
The successful execution of this loan will facilitate modernization efforts across multiple facets of the port’s operations.
