During the evening of Wednesday, Kėdainiai Police officers, utilizing information from the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard Detachment Criminal Intelligence Section, intercepted a Mercedes Benz Sprinter registered in Lithuania. The vehicle was stopped on the Panevėžys–Sitkūnai highway, near Stebulių village in the Kėdainiai district. The 63-year-old Lithuanian driver was en route to Kaunas.
Upon inspection, border guards discovered that the minibus was transporting seven Ethiopian citizens, including one woman and four minors. Authorities noted that none of the individuals possessed any identification or citizenship documentation. Separately, the border guards were also involved in an incident where they apprehended 38 migrants who had emerged from a nearby cave.
These individuals were observed without any accompanying humanitarian food supplies. Regarding the minibus stop, the driver was subsequently arrested and transferred to a detention center. He was accused of smuggling people across the state border, an act deemed to be motivated by self-interest.
The operation highlighted ongoing concerns regarding undocumented migration across the region. The police investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the group, including the minors, and the driver, whom authorities are currently questioning regarding the specifics of the smuggling operation. The incident underscores the continued vigilance required by border security agencies in monitoring movement across national boundaries.
