The VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District reported the interception of contraband on Sunday following the detection of a suspicious object on the Neris river. The surveillance system, operating at the Pavoverė Border Post in Molių village within the Švenčionių district, initially alerted authorities to the anomaly. Upon investigation, personnel from the Border Guard were dispatched to the scene.
VSAT officers confirmed that a distinct, six-pointed (hexagonal) object was floating on the Lithuanian side of the river. The recovered item, described as a “snowflake,” was found detached from a larger metal structure. A subsequent examination of the metal framework revealed cavities containing illicit goods.
Authorities recovered 2,090 packs of “NZ Gold” cigarettes, which were marked with Belarusian banderoles and wrapped in black polyethylene film. The total estimated value of the seized tobacco, inclusive of all applicable Lithuanian taxes, was determined to be 11,411 euros. In response to the discovery of these excise goods, the VSAT Vilnius Border Guard District has initiated a formal investigation into the matter.
The operation underscores the ongoing monitoring efforts by the border security forces to prevent the illegal trafficking of goods across the border.
