A significant paleontological find has been recovered from the Stryi River by Volodymyr Procis, a border guard and former student of Lviv National University’s Geography Faculty. The discovery is a large mammoth tooth, which university representatives stated will be a valuable addition to the institution’s collection and serve as crucial educational material for students. Volodymyr Procis reported that the fossil measures 35 centimeters in length and weighs 7.440 kilograms.
He estimates the artifact dates back to the Pleistocene epoch, potentially ranging from 10,000 to several hundred thousand years ago. According to Procis, the tooth exhibits a characteristic serrated surface pattern, which he noted is unique to the dental structure of mammoths. He added that such fossils are frequently washed out of Pleistocene sediments in Ukraine, particularly along riverbanks near the Carpathian region.
The academic community has praised Procis for his contribution. University officials acknowledged the importance of the find, noting that it preserves a piece of the country’s deep history. The recovery underscores the region’s rich paleontological record.
