A Sudanese refugee who did not receive a Latvian refugee status traveled to Poland with a foreign document

Border guards from the VSAT Pagėgių detachment conducted a stop on a bus on Saturday night in the Joniškio district, near Kalvių village. The vehicle was en route to Warsaw, having traveled via Riga and originally servicing the route from Vaasa, Finland. During routine checks of the passengers, the attention of the border guards was drawn to a foreign traveler heading from Riga to Warsaw.

This individual presented documentation identifying them as an Italian refugee. Upon conducting a personal examination, the guards discovered a decision from the Latvian migration service. This document indicated that the individual was actually a 24-year-old Sudanese citizen, to whom the service had refused granting refugee or alternative status.

The border guards became suspicious regarding the authenticity or correct ownership of the travel document presented by the passenger. Consequently, based on their findings, the authorities determined that the passenger could not proceed with their journey. The investigation highlighted a discrepancy between the documentation presented and the individual’s actual status as determined by Latvian authorities.

The action taken by the guards underscores the process by who is authorized to travel across international borders, particularly when documentation conflicts with official records. The stop resulted in the passenger being denied passage while the border guards continued their inspection protocols.
