A thousand-strong protest in Prague against the national broadcaster

Demonstrators gathered outside the headquarters of the public broadcaster for a significant protest. The demonstration was organized by the movement “One Million Moments for Democracy,” which has coordinated similar marches across major cities in the Czech Republic since May. Central to the protesters’ concerns is the perceived political influence over the institution.

Speakers and organizers warned that the broadcaster risks being transformed into a governmental tool. Adding to the discussion, billionaire A. Babiš stated that the public broadcaster possesses sufficient potential to reduce its expenditures, suggesting that current allocations of money are excessive.

In response, the Prime Minister issued a promise that the institution will remain free from political interference. The protest also drew comparisons to international political situations. For instance, the situation in Slovenia was noted, where the ruling left faces challenges from the conservative opposition, symbolized by the slogan, “Freedom for the public needs free media.” Amid these concerns regarding editorial independence and funding, the demonstrators formally called for the resignation of the Minister of Culture, Otto Klemp.

The event highlights ongoing public debate regarding the necessary autonomy and financial management of state-funded media outlets.
