About the changes in the health system laws – a mess: could the members of the Seimas have been misled? A presidential decision is expected

An extraordinary remote meeting of the Seimas Health Committee (SRK) convened a few hours before a scheduled parliamentary vote. During the session, committee member Jurgita Sejonienė raised concerns regarding a specific legislative project under consideration. She reminded her colleagues that the State Tuberculosis Center (STT) had previously reviewed the project and submitted negative commentary last December.

Specifically, the STT’s prior feedback highlighted potential risks of corruption and cautioned that the proposed framework might establish exceptional and undue privileges for certain private health care institutions. Questioning the necessity of advancing the measure, J. Sejonienė asked the committee members to explain the rationale for considering the project given the STT’s documented critical assessment.

The discussion focused heavily about the suitability and potential impact of the proposed changes on the national health sector. The procedural questions raised by Sejonienė underscored a divergence between the committee’s current consideration of the bill and the expert warnings issued by the STT. In response to the concerns raised by the committee member, Deputy Minister S.

Krunkaitis addressed the assembled parliamentarians. He provided reassurances to the members, aiming to clarify the current status and the path forward for the legislation before the Seimas. The exchange highlighted a key point of deliberation within the committee regarding regulatory oversight and the balance between private sector involvement and public interest protections within the national healthcare system.
