The Perkūno Alėja borders the Ąžuolynas, an area recognized as Europe’s largest naturally formed urban space, notable for its extensive oak forest. This significant green area spans about 84 hectares and contains several thousand oak trees, some of which are estimated to be centuries old. Svajūnas Urbonavičius, Deputy Head of the Environmental Protection Department for the Kaunas City Council, provided clarification regarding the status of a specific tree.
He confirmed that the tree in question will not be removed. According to Urbonius, a permit has been granted solely for the pruning of the tree due to its critical condition, specifically because the entire upper portion of the tree has rotted. Urbonius stated that despite the necessary pruning work, the tree itself will remain in place.
The modifications are intended to ensure that the area remains safe for both pedestrians and nearby buildings. The preservation of the mature oak forest within the Ąžuolynas remains a key feature of this large urban environment.
