According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the recent crossings by migrants were primarily fueled by the dissemination of disinformation across social networks. The confusion stemmed from human trafficking activities and the misinterpretation of a single decision issued by a Spanish court. This misinformation led migrants to believe they could enter Europe without facing immediate repatriation.
The scale of the arrivals has been significant. Official estimates indicate that between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants arrived from Morocco to Ceuta by Friday. Furthermore, over the course of just a few days, an estimated 85,000 people residing in the broader area were impacted by the influx.
However, differing figures have been reported regarding the exact numbers. The Moroccan Ministry provided a contrasting estimate, stating that the number of individuals was closer to 40,000, with an additional 1,135 people reaching Melilla. According to the Ministry, all individuals who reached Melilla were immediately returned to their point of origin.
