Gastroenterologists have noted that improper self-care during periods away from routine medical supervision can lead to acute gastrointestinal issues, often resulting in visits to the doctor’s office and interrupting a planned vacation. According to a recent press release, the incidence of gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting, tends to rise during the summer months. Prof.

Dr. Ieva Stundienė, a gastroenterologist at Vilnius Clinics, attributes this seasonal increase not solely to dietary changes, but significantly to elevated temperatures. She explains that the heat accelerates the spoilage process of food, creating favorable conditions for bacterial multiplication.

The primary source of infection often stems from food that has been improperly stored or insufficiently treated. During warm weather, conditions are particularly conducive to the growth of pathogens, making illnesses like salmonellosis more common. These environmental factors combine with changes in typical summer diets, placing increased stress on the digestive system.

As a result, many individuals find their enjoyable time away disrupted by acute digestive symptoms, necessitating medical attention. Specialists advise that vigilance regarding food safety and proper food handling is crucial to mitigating the risk of infection throughout the summer season.
