As garbaga crisis intensifies, V. Benkunskas accuses: “Is it normal to call my wife? Absolute bottom”

Politician V. Benkunskas publicly voiced significant concerns regarding the waste management infrastructure in the Vilnius region. Speaking on Facebook, Benkunskas questioned the nature of recent communications from the private waste management company, suggesting that the frequency of such contact raises questions about what is considered standard practice.

He further questioned the degree of reliance the region’s residents have on a single private entity. Benkunskas also alleged that the company was engaging in tactics such as spreading conspiracy theories, applying public pressure, and manipulating public opinion. He reiterated previous warnings about the private operator, “Energesman,” noting that the situation was deteriorating.

According to Benkunskas, the accumulation of waste and mounting debt within the company posed significant risks. He stated that assessments from various institutions corroborated his belief that the situation was critical and required immediate intervention. These concerns culminated in an announcement last week regarding the termination of the contract with the private operator.

The controversy highlights ongoing debate over the operational viability and oversight of the waste management sector by the private company. Benkunskas’s statements emphasize a call for greater scrutiny of the existing arrangements and suggest that the current operational model is not sustainable or, in his view, normal for the region.
