Last week, Lithuanian customs officers intercepted a lorry near Kryžkalnis in the Raseiniai district, resulting in the seizure of nearly half a million packs of illegal cigarettes. Authorities suspect that these cigarettes were manufactured in clandestine factories within Latvia. This represents the largest seizure of illegal cigarettes recorded by Lithuanian customs this year.
In conjunction with efforts to control illegal migration, officers from the State Border Guard Service conducted heightened security checks on major national roadways over the past week. On July 30, a patrol unit from the criminal police stopped and inspected a DAF lorry at the A1 Vilnius–Klaipėda road, near Kryžkalnis, which had entered Lithuania from Latvia. Upon opening the trailer, the officers discovered the interior filled with trays containing boxes wrapped in white polyethylene film.
A review of these items revealed numerous packs of cigarettes. The operation highlighted the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to interdict contraband goods.
