Candidate for Culture Minister L. Alsys expressed his opinion on the removal of the Nemunas monument: history cannot be destroyed(1)

Art historian L. Alsys stated that the removal of sculptures sparking significant public disagreement must first be subject to extensive debate. He noted that Salomėja Nėris is a figure who generates considerable controversy among art historians, critics, and historians.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the country’s leader, Alsys emphasized that the decision regarding such matters cannot rest with one individual. According to Alsys, the determination should instead be reached through a consensus involving the broader community and the public. Nevertheless, he expressed a commitment to preserving historical integrity.

He stressed the need to differentiate between discussions concerning culture and its artistic elements, such as plastic or sculpture, and the individual person herself. While the minister candidate acknowledged the necessity of finding a balance between these two aspects, Alsys maintained that any action involving public art should follow a thorough consultative process. His comments suggest a measured approach is required when addressing contentious pieces of art, prioritizing community dialogue over unilateral decision-making to safeguard cultural heritage.
