The Court of Appeal has increased the fine levied against R. Žemaitaitis, the leader of the “Aušra” movement, concerning charges of incitement to hatred and Holocaust denial. The appellate body upheld the charges and rejected the appeals filed by both Žemaitaitis and his legal counsel.
This updated ruling from the court became effective immediately. Previously, the Vilnius District Court had found Žemaitaitis guilty of the aforementioned offenses. In its initial ruling last December, the first instance court had imposed a fine of 5,000 euros, determining that as a state politician, Žemaitaitis was responsible for the incitement.
The subsequent proceedings reached the Court of Appeal, which reviewed the matter. Following the review, the appellate court increased the financial penalty from the original 5,000 euros to a total of 10,000 euros. Žemaitaitis did not appear before the court to hear the final decision handed down by the judges’ colleague who presided over the case.
The judgment confirms the findings regarding the charges of incitement to hatred and Holocaust denial, solidifying the penalties established through the appeals process.
