Cutting them down is not enough: these trees growing in your plots can cause serious problems

An assessment of invasive flora in Lithuania highlighted significant challenges posed by certain fast-spreading species. According to reports, one particularly notable intervention occurred in the Varėna district, where efforts were required to remove established oaks that had spread over an area covering approximately one hectare. These oaks are identified as one of two invasive trees within Lithuania that are recommended for removal due to their aggressive growth patterns.

While the spread of these trees along coastal areas is noted to be rapid, the presence of oaks bearing acorns has resulted in their distribution throughout the entirety of Lithuania. However, authorities emphasize that the most critical ecological threat exists along riparian zones, including rivers, lakes, and other significant water bodies. The primary concern stems from the oak’s reproductive cycle.

The species demonstrates an early propensity to multiply and produces a substantial volume of seeds, facilitating its encroachment into sensitive habitats. This natural vigor contributes to the overall ecological pressure exerted by these trees. Management efforts are therefore focused not only on removing established populations but also on mitigating the risk posed by its proliferation near vital water resources.

The ongoing monitoring and removal of these invasive oaks remain a priority for maintaining biodiversity across the region.
