Dangerous incident on the Belarusian border: migrants who had emerged from a tunnel attacked Lithuanian officials(1)

On July 26th, an alleged incident took place in the vicinity of the Kapčiamiesčio checkpoint, near the border with Belarus. Reports indicate that border security personnel discovered a tunnel and subsequently detained several migrants attempting to cross illegally. Following this, approximately 20 additional individuals emerged from the subterranean passage and reportedly confronted the border guards.

The details of the confrontation were brought to public attention on Wednesday via a post on the social media platform Facebook by Vilma Danauskienė, a politician representing Lazdijai. Danauskienė stated that the attempt by the migrants to enter Lithuania through the tunnel ultimately failed. In her post, Danauskienė addressed the handling of the situation by the border guards of the Lazdijai district.

She questioned the decision-making process of the leadership within the Varėna district and the Kapčiamiesčio checkpoint. Specifically, she questioned why the border guards, numbering four, were reportedly deployed against a group of migrants armed with sticks and stones, suggesting that operational intelligence received from foreign counterparts had been disregarded. The incident highlights ongoing tensions and security concerns along the national border.

Danauskienė’s public commentary focused on accountability, demanding clarification from the VSAT general regarding the operational procedures followed by the local leadership during the confrontation at the border.
