Did you not transfer the money there? It may not be so easy to get it back – here’s what you need to know

Julius Ivaška, the Director of the Business Department at Urbo Bank, reported to the media that errors concerning beneficiary details, account numbers, or specified payment amounts occur on a near-daily basis. He detailed various scenarios where transactional mistakes are common. For instance, Ivaška noted that clients using internet banking may mistakenly select a utility supplier from their payment history when they intended to transfer funds to an individual.

Another frequent issue involves overpayment when settling taxes with institutions such as Sodros or the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI). When clients report incorrect transfers, the bank confirms it takes immediate action. The bank’s protocol involves attempting to halt the transaction if it has not yet been processed, or initiating a formal cancellation procedure.

However, Ivaška highlighted a significant challenge posed by modern payment infrastructure. Because the majority of transfers are now instantaneous, the intended funds reach the beneficiary immediately. Consequently, any reversal or recovery of the money must also be executed with immediate effect.

This speed necessitates constant vigilance from both the sender and the financial institutions to ensure that the correct recipient is designated and that the amount transferred is accurate, rather than what was intended or what is simply convenient.
