Doctors who caused 330 thousand euros of damage to the state avoided prison

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Lithuania has reported that an investigation has identified six doctors who allegedly failed to perform their professional duties correctly. These medical professionals are suspected of committing a criminal act under Article 229 of the Penal Code. According to the case data reviewed, the misconduct involved the failure of the doctors to properly assess the health status or ascertain the actual medical needs of their patients.

Furthermore, they are accused of prescribing state-subsidized absorbent gel bandages without providing valid medical justification. In several instances, prescriptions were reportedly issued to patients either without their consent or when such measures were medically unnecessary. These actions reportedly caused material damage exceeding 330,000 euros to the budget of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund.

Despite the fact that the damage has since been compensated or an agreement has been reached for its compensation, and considering that the doctors have admitted to the criminal acts and expressed remorse, their actions were nevertheless deemed criminal in nature. The investigation highlights a breach of trust and professional duty by the doctors, indicating that certain medical protocols were not followed, resulting in significant financial loss to the state system.
