Druskininkai declared European Tree City for 2026

Druskininkai has been recognized as the first city in Lithuania to receive the prestigious European Tree City Award. Mayor Ričardas Malinauskas stated that the local administration is proud of the achievement and credited the dedicated team of city officials for their professional care of the city’s trees. The nomination process involved landscape and greenery experts, alongside the Lithuanian Arborists Association.

The evaluation for the European Tree City (ECOT) award took place across several locations, including presentations in Vilnius and Kaunas. Members of the European Tree City working group visited Lithuania to assess the tree care practices within each participating city on-site. The experts compiled their findings and impressions, which were subsequently presented to the respective arborists’ associations.

Following this evaluation, the final decision was determined by secret ballot and formally confirmed during a meeting of the European Arborists’ Council. This recognition highlights the commitment of the city of Druskininkai to urban greening and sustainable horticulture. The award acknowledges the comprehensive efforts undertaken to maintain and enhance the urban canopy, affirming the quality of care provided to every tree within the community.

The success solidifies Druskininkai’s reputation among European peers for its dedication to preserving and nurturing its natural environment within the city structure.
