During the wedding – a stern sign from the sky: guests were left in awe

In July, the Orthodox Church located in the center of Tampere was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm shortly after 5 p.m. The incident occurred while a joint wedding and christening ceremony was taking place within the premises. The lightning strike impacted the highest tower of the church, resulting in a fire that engulfed the wooden structures in the upper section of the tower.

According to data provided by the Pirkanmaa rescue department and the Orthodox Church of Tampere, emergency services responded to the scene, working on the blaze until late into the evening to bring the fire under control. Firefighters reported facing difficulties in containing the fire at the tower’s peak; however, they confirmed that the flames did not spread to other parts of the building. No casualties were reported in connection with the incident.

Following the event, parish representatives stated their relief that the fire remained localized. The focus of the response efforts remained on managing the structural damage sustained by the historic church tower. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of the structure to severe weather, prompting immediate and sustained efforts from local emergency services.
