Minister of Energy and Communications Lukas Savickas outlined significant infrastructural upgrades necessary to enhance the resilience of the nation’s electricity grid following storm damage. Savickas stated that to substantially reduce the impact of severe weather events on the electricity supply, an estimated 6,000 kilometers of the existing network would need to be converted to underground cabling. Furthermore, he noted that within the subsequent year, approximately 2,000 kilometers of the network located in forested areas would require similar underground replacement.
Speaking to LRT television on Tuesday, Savickas identified faster cabling as a crucial point for future planning. He expressed hope that this issue could be addressed promptly after the completion of current electricity supply restoration efforts, allowing for the implementation of these works with minimal delay and appropriate resource allocation. However, this proposal met with caution from the head of ESO.
According to the expert, undertaking such extensive cabling projects would necessitate substantial additional funding. ESO’s head cautioned that securing these funds could potentially affect the overall competitiveness of the country’s business sector. The discussion highlights a critical divergence in opinion regarding the immediate financial feasibility versus the long-term structural improvements required for the national electricity infrastructure.
