President Gitanas Nausėda issued a decree on Thursday appointing Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the candidate from the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), as the prospective Prime Minister. Sinkevičius’s candidacy is scheduled to be formally presented to the Seimas on Thursday evening. Following this presentation in the plenary session, parliamentarians will have a period of no more than one week to vote and determine the new Prime Minister.

Separately, the group representing “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” (LTG) released the findings of a study concerning recent train incidents. The investigation determined that the May accident that occurred in Jiesia, located in the Kaunas district, was attributable to the actions of the station guard. Furthermore, regarding the incident at Gudžiūnai station in the Kėdainiai district, the study identified a defective bogie as the cause.

This failure occurred specifically in a section where the rolling stock’s automatic control system had been deactivated.
