ELTA: Briefly: The Mayor of Prienai is being asked to be convicted in the “chips” case, the municipality has agreed with “Tilsta” to reconstruct the Holy Harbor

Prienų mayor Alvydas Vaicekauskas has been accused of several financial and administrative offenses, including forgery, abuse of power, and the embezzlement of municipal property. In connection with these allegations, the prosecutor has requested a fine amounting to 7.5 thousand euros. Separately, the municipality of Palanga is undergoing a major infrastructure development concerning the reconstruction of the Holy Sea Port.

The contract for this significant project was awarded to the company Tilsta, with the total value reaching 38.23 million euros, inclusive of VAT. According to Mayor Šarūnas Vaitkus, the redevelopment of the port is considered critically important for the region’s future economic stability. He emphasized that the modernized facility is designed to serve multiple vital sectors.

These include supporting recreational shipping activities, boosting tourism, facilitating local fishing industries, accommodating state institutions, and generally fostering the growth of the broader maritime economy. The investigation into Vaicekauskas’s conduct highlights potential governance issues within local administration, while the Palanga port project underscores the municipality’s commitment to large-scale economic revitalization. The two matters—the legal proceedings against the mayor and the multi-million euro port reconstruction—represent distinct facets of recent local governance activities.
