Family doctor: What signals the body when it lacks fluids

Toma Byštautaitė, a family doctor at Antėja Health Clinic, has issued warnings regarding the risks of dehydration, particularly as dangerous heatwaves sweep across Europe, with temperatures reportedly exceeding 39 degrees Celsius. According to Byštautaitė, the signs that the body is losing essential fluids can manifest subtly. Initial indicators include dry mouth and noticeable thirst, but other signs warrant attention, such as dark urine, persistent headaches, general weakness, or dry skin.

She noted that sometimes, a lack of adequate hydration can present merely as unexplained fatigue. These symptoms signal that the body’s fluid levels are already diminished, emphasizing the need to drink water regularly rather than waiting until severe thirst sets in. Proper hydration is critical for several fundamental bodily functions.

Adequate fluid intake is necessary to maintain normal core body temperature, ensure efficient blood circulation throughout the system, support digestive tract activity, and facilitate the elimination of unnecessary waste products through urine. The expert stressed that preventative measures are key to protecting the entire family unit during periods of extreme heat. Maintaining consistent fluid intake throughout the day is therefore advised.

By monitoring these subtle indicators and proactively consuming water, individuals can help their bodies sustain the necessary balance required to mitigate the risks associated with high ambient temperatures.
