Following the stabbing attack in Belfast, xenophobic protests escalated

Following the release of a video, hundreds of individuals assembled in various locations across Belfast. According to AFP journalists, many of the attendees were wearing masks. During the unrest, several vehicles, including a bus and multiple cars, were set alight within the city.

Television footage also depicted buildings engulfed in flames. One resident described the escalation of the situation, stating that at 7:30 PM, demonstrators set fire to garbage bins. This was accompanied by the sound of police vehicles and sirens.

Eemran, an Indian engineer who has resided in Belfast for over a year, reported that the crowds continued to grow, leading to the throwing of incendiary devices. He observed that the resulting fire quickly spread, producing smoke within a building. According to Eemran, firefighters eventually arrived and evacuated everyone safely to the street.

A 36-year-old Chilean national, who had moved to Belfast only a month prior, recounted an instance where she was speaking with a friend when the events unfolded. The gathering saw more people joining the unrest, resulting in property damage and emergency response efforts in the city.
