The increasing reliance on digital channels for banking transactions has highlighted a continuing need for physical access points for some residents. Recognizing this gap, the Bank of Lithuania is implementing measures to ensure that essential financial services remain accessible beyond major metropolitan areas. According to Gediminas Šimkus, Chairman of the Bank of Lithuania, the initiative aims to extend physical banking services into various regions, ensuring that more residents can conduct necessary operations in person.
Šimkus stated that a cooperative solution has been established with commercial banks to achieve this goal across an expanded network of municipalities. Specific changes are planned for numerous municipalities, including Pakruojis, Zarasai, Ignalina, Trakai, Šakius, Pagėgiuose, Rietave, Prienai, Kazlų Rūda, and Kalvarija. To facilitate this expansion, the Bank of Lithuania has already engaged with local municipal authorities to secure cooperation.
The successful rollout of these enhanced services hinges significantly on the partnership between the banking sector and local governments. The Bank of Lithuania emphasized that the involvement of the municipalities will be crucial in identifying and securing appropriate premises for the resumed or established bank operations. This concerted effort seeks to provide comprehensive financial services, ensuring that the needs of residents across diverse regions are met through a combination of modern digital tools and reliable physical banking infrastructure.
