For the benefit of thousands of residents, the electricity bill will be increased in July: contracts will be terminated

The Lithuanian parliament convened on Tuesday to vote on a proposed project submitted by the Energy Ministry. The legislation addresses changes concerning electricity supply tariffs and consumer rights. A key provision allows consumers the ability to formally object to the mandated switch to the public supply tariff, retaining the option to keep their existing service contract.

Furthermore, the draft mandates that all affected residents must receive notification regarding any planned contract termination no later than thirty calendar days prior to the change taking effect. The core of the Energy Ministry’s proposal involves amending existing law to alleviate the financial burden currently placed on vulnerable residents. Under the current structure, statistically defined vulnerable consumers face a monthly surcharge ranging from three to nine euros, with some cases incurring even higher costs, when compared to the standard public electricity tariff.

The public electricity supplier, Ignitis, currently applies its pricing structure to two distinct groups of consumers: those classified as vulnerable, and those who consume the lowest levels of energy. The proposed changes aim to restructure this financial framework. These legislative adjustments are intended to modernize the management of residential energy services.

The passage of this bill will redefine the terms under which residents receive essential energy services, ensuring that the mechanisms for tariff implementation and consumer objection are clearly established within the national framework.

  1. This combination of rate hikes and contract terminations raises serious concerns for local residents.

  2. What specific provisions allow consumers to object to the mandated switch in electricity tariffs?
