G. Nausėda: The task of the Ministry of Finance is the security of the gates, the defense line is the deputy ministers

During an appearance on the LRT TV show “Days of the Week” on Thursday, Gitanas Nausėda offered an analogy comparing the role of finance ministers to the dynamics of football. He suggested that while previous ministers were primarily characterized by their focus on defense—metaphorically described as guarding the gates—the current candidate displayed notable courage and creativity, potentially allowing the ministry to “turn on the attack.”

Despite acknowledging this potential for offensive strategy, Nausėda stressed the foundational importance of fiscal stability. He emphasized that the core duty of the Ministry of Finance remains the security of the gates.

According to Nausėda, even if the primary minister’s focus shifts outward, the defensive line must remain exceptionally reliable. He specifically addressed the role of deputy ministers, stating that the support team within the finance ministry must maintain an unwavering grasp of crucial financial details. This support structure, he asserted, must be so dependable that it can function effectively even when the minister is preoccupied or dealing with unforeseen challenges.

The message underscored that while innovation is valued, the bedrock of the finance sector—the protection of its financial gates—requires constant, rigorous oversight from all supporting ministers and staff.
