Has the former cinema been counting its last days?

The site of the former “Jūratė and Kastytis” cinema is currently characterized by active construction activity, with visible building materials and temporary facilities for workers surrounding the premises. This cinema, which opened in February 1977, was historically significant as the only venue in the southern Klaipėda region boasting over 600 seats across two halls. Recently, the property underwent a major transaction.

The company “DIFF Estate” was acquired by “Eriadas,” a firm indirectly controlled by the shareholders of the Šiauliai construction company “Eriadas.” This acquisition was finalized at an auction late in 2024, involving a building spanning 1,500 square meters situated on a 57-acre plot, with an initial bid price of 789.3 thousand euros. The location, identified in the Klaipėda region’s online guide, occupies the historical area of the old shipyard site. While the recent sale marks a significant change in ownership, the involved company issued no immediate statements regarding future development plans for the site.

Officials indicated they would provide updates as soon as definitive plans are established. The ongoing construction work suggests substantial redevelopment is underway at this prominent former cultural landmark.
