The government enacted amendments to the People’s Burial Rites Act on Tuesday, establishing a new fee structure for burial services. These revisions mandate the payment of a one-time local fee, set by the municipal budget, for reserving space within a columbarium room funded by municipal resources. Previously, the allocation of space in columbariums established with municipal funds was provided without any associated cost to the user.
The government stated that the fee adjustment reflects the growing popularity of cremation services. As cremation rates have increased, the demand for designated spaces to inter cremated remains within columbarium settings has risen significantly. Supporting this trend, data from the Association of Lithuanian Municipalities indicates that the installation of columbariums across various municipalities commenced on November 1, 2022.
The introduction of the local fee aims to establish a sustainable funding mechanism for the maintenance and expansion of these community burial facilities. The amendment solidifies the financial framework for utilizing these public amenities. By implementing this fee, the local authorities aim to manage the increasing utilization of columbarium space, ensuring that the costs associated with the allocation of dedicated interment space are factored into the municipal financial planning process moving forward.
