Researchers from the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait conducted a study examining the impact of dietary changes on mice.

Over a period of 16 weeks, twelve mice were placed on a low-fat diet, divided into groups based on their sucrose intake—some receiving sucrose while others were restricted from it. The findings, reported by Science Alert, focused specifically on the mice that did not consume sucrose. According to the study’s authors, the absence of sucrose significantly altered the composition of the mice’ gut microbiome.

At the conclusion of the experiment, these mice exhibited a reduction in beneficial bacterial strains. Furthermore, the gut environment showed an increase in bacterial strains associated with inflammatory processes. This suggests that while reducing sugar intake is often advised, the gut microbiome may rely on a more complex dietary input than previously assumed.

The shift away from sucrose appears to correlate with an unfavorable shift in gut flora, pointing toward a potential imbalance rather than immediate improvement. These results prompt further research into the nuanced relationship between specific dietary components and gut health.
