I. Ruginienė congratulates on the anniversary of the founding of Sąjūdis: we are united as the decision-makers of our fate

Sąjūdis Legacy Highlights Power of Unity and Truth

Lithuanian leader I. Ruginienė emphasized the enduring significance of Sąjūdis, describing it not merely as a historical period but as a testament to the strength of individuals united by fearlessness and a commitment to truth. The movement, established in 1988, remains a powerful example of collective action focused on achieving freedom.

Ruginienė characterized Sąjūdis as a resolute and constructive force, driven by a shared desire to unite people toward a common goal. She noted that the movement’s groundwork for Lithuania’s independence continues to offer optimism and confidence for the nation’s present, illustrating the people’s capacity to shape their own destiny. Initially formed as the 35-member LPS initiative group in June 1988 within the Vilnius Academy of Sciences, Sąjūdis organized public rallies throughout the summer and autumn.

These events served to disseminate ideas regarding critical societal issues and facilitated the publication of materials under the movement’s banner. The movement’s core principle was that its strength derived from the unified will of the populace seeking self-determination, rather than reliance on force. This emphasis on popular sovereignty remains a central element of Lithuania’s historical narrative.
